Beyond Koblenz

Worth preserving for future generations

In 2002, the cultural landscape “Upper Middle Rhine Valley“ was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO committee. This historic region of great diversity and natural beauty owes its impressive visual appearance to the natural fluvial landscape combined with the influences of human intervention. For two thousand years, the Middle Rhine Valley between Bingen and Koblenz has formed a central cultural and economic link between the Mediterranean region and Northern Europe.
The UNESCO-protected area covers a 65 kilometre long stretch of the Rhine Valley. The deep canyon of the “Upper Middle Rhine Valley” is also a natural landscape with a unique climate. It is home to animals and plants which are otherwise only found in the Mediterranean region. At different times it has served both as a heavily disputed border and as a bridge between cultures. And so it is that this World Heritage Site is a perfect mirror of Europe’s chequered history.
