For thousands of years the unique landscape of softly rolling hills and green forests to be found in the Middle Rhine region of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate has been acknowledged as the cradle of Germany’s cultural landscape. Everywhere visitors can experience fascinating encounters with the past, such as the Roman fort of Boppard, the medieval castles perched atop the steep slopes of the river valley and the Prussian fortress of Ehrenbreitstein in Koblenz.
The stretch of Rhine between Bingen in the south and Remagen in the north is one of the most famous landscapes in the whole of Germany. Countless songs and tales tell of the castles and people of the Rhine – the beautiful siren Lorelei sitting on her rock, Bingen’s ‘Mouse Tower’ or the seven proud virgins of Oberwesel, to name but a few. Many hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to the region every year to breathe in all the history.
