Linking up to create spaces – the Transitional Areas

Apart from the core areas, planners are also setting structural accents in other places. Outside the exhibition site, new spaces will be created to link up the central points of the Federal Horticultural Show Koblenz 2011. The main theme here is “recreation and leisure for all”. At the Konrad-Adenauer-Riverbank, where the dilapidated retaining wall is being meticulously restored, a magnificent riverside boulevard is taking shape under a leafy canopy of old plane trees. A green, traffic-free corridor will stretch along the banks of the Rhine and Moselle. The generous expanse of tiered stone seating to the rear of the Electoral Palace offering direct access to the river will invite you to stay awhile and watch the world go by. Even the right bank of the Rhine and the Moselle’s left bank are gaining new visual features through the redevelopment of the river port and riverbank areas. One example is the municipal camp-site opposite Deutsches Eck which is undergoing extensive modernisation. All around the Electoral Palace other spaces, too, are being given a new look. In future, the Clemensplatz in front of the town’s theatre will be a completely vehicle-free area. Together with the Reichenspergerplatz it will form a green axis stretching down to the Rhine.

Making connections through change – as part of the overall design for the Federal Horticultural Show Koblenz 2011, these new peripheral spaces form a pleasing approach framework around the core inner-city areas Electoral Palace and Blumenhof. Similarly, the new railway stop being built not far from the palace will provide an attractive access route to the BUGA site via the Schlossstrasse.
